It's true! We may be small children, but some of us have pocket money - we can make choices with how we spend our own money to help the Earth. But also, most importantly, we can use our voices to encourage our parents, and our grandparents, and our uncles and aunts and friends, anc school teachers, and everyone they know! We can get the grown ups to think twice before they buy! In this slide you can dind two helpful websites to help us all make better choices about what we buy!
This is a good website to use if you want to check whether or not the beauty products that you or your family are buying are cruelty free and good for the environment or not.
A high amount of its materials are made from recycled fabrics, including its polyester, nylon, and wool. Patagonia belongs to both the Sustainable Apparel Coalition and 1% For The Planet. It rejects fast fashion by creating high-quality, long-lasting products, and offers a repair and reuse program.
This lovely webpage has lots of great ideas for making a birthday really special without hurting the earth.
Wrapping Gifts and Not Hurting the Earth at the Same Time
We've been thinking about how excited we are that Winter Holidays aren't too far away! But we've also been wondering about how we can try and think about the Earth more this season, and make sure that we share our thoughts with others too! Rosaleen started by preparing this presentation for an Earth Club Meeting. During the meeting we decided to make a quiz, and a flyer to help share our ideas with others! Here is the presentation, and you can see the quiz and flyer below too! Please share these with your family and friends!
Please take a look at our flyer and share it with your family and friends!
This year Earth Club added a new video to share with family and friends ahead of Christmas Shopping !
Valentine's Day
What is Valentine's Day? Where Did the Tradition Come From? And How Might it Hurt or Help the Earth?
This February at Earth Club these are the questions we are asking!
Where Did Valentines Day Come From?
We took a look at the National Geographic Kids to learn more about where the tradition of celebrating Valentine's Day came from.
What is Valentine's Day TODAY?
Martha "I think it's connected to Easter, people give out chocolate eggs at Easter, and they give out chocolates on Valentines day too"
Rosaleen "I think it's connected to Christmas. It's about kindness"
Nuri "I think it's a bit the same now as it was centuries ago. People are sharing messages on cards or in emails like they would have done in letters or cards years ago"
How Might Valentine's Day Hurt the Earth?
Martha "I think it's not good that the cards people give out then just get thrown away, it's a waste of paper. There might be lots of wasted wrappers or plastic things, plastic toys, and gifts, and that's not good""
Nuri "When you buy chocolates the person eats the chocolates and then throws away the papers and the wrappers"
Rosaleen "I think people might buy fake plastic flowers and that would be be bad for the earth"
How Could We Change Valentine's Day to Make it Better for the Earth?
Nuri "If I was to change Valentines Day I would give an Earth Friendly Gift, something you just don't throw away, or if it's paper then it can be put in the recycling bin."
Martha "You could send a card but I think you would need to make sure that you could re-use it, or give them something like a bag that could be reused"
Rosaleen "Maybe they'd want to keep the card forever. Or people could recycle the wraping paper or keep it to use again"
A Love Note To The Earth
We decided to draw some valentines hearts but instead of just writting a message about how much we love or appreciate someone, we decided to write a message to inspire someone to help us take care of the earth.
Storytime
Here are some new stories we found about how we can appreciate and love our EARTH!
