π Rosaleen's Grandpa came to visit Earth Club to tell us all about the bees he looks after. π
Why are bees so important?
How do they help the environment?
And why are they (and many other insects) under threat?
We learnt all about different kinds of bees and the jobs that different bees have. We learnt that bees visit flowers to collect nectar to eat later. We also learnt that pollen from flowers sticks to the bees and as they fly from place to place they scatter the pollen. By spreading the pollen more flowers and plants can grow.
We learnt that changes in our towns and cities have meant that it's hard for bees to find enough flowers. Also, some of the chemicals that farmers use on their crops are actually poisonous to bees. Because of this many bees and other insects are dying out.
How Can We Help The Bees?
ππ We learnt that we can plant more flowers and build hives or give bees more places to live - but we might need a grown up to help us.
ππ We also learnt that we can talk to our family, our teachers and our friends. The more people we tell, the more we can help the bees. Because if our parents buy fruit and vegetables and other food that hasn't been grown using yucky chemicals - then we will be sending a message to the farmers to ask them to find a different solution. We will be saying - Don't hurt the insects, or we won't buy your food and farm produce!
ππ Also we can write to our local governement - the people in our home area that make the rules, or ask them to take our questions and concerns to the big law makers in the capital cities of our countries. Maybe we can even write to our presidents or prime ministers.
ππ If we try we CAN help the bees!
