It's Springtime in the Northern Hemisphere right now, Cherry Blossoms are in Bloom in Japan, Crocuses and Daffodils in Europe, and after a long hard winter in Mongolia, tiny buds are just starting to appear. So we did some wondering about spring, and thought it might be nice to do some investigation together
We found a video that helps us understand why spring comes to different parts of the world at different times. Lets start here!
So, what were the most interesting things we learnt?
Nuri - I learnt that our Earth is always tilting, and I didn't know there was a day called Equinox.
Nora - I didn't know about the word Equinox before, I thought it was pretty interesting
Rosaleen - I learnt that there is always one part of the Earth that points towards the sun, and that when the sun shines on the equator the days last longer.
National Geo Kids has an article that helped us learn all about the first signs of spring in the UK... the bluebell forests look SO beautiful!
Nuri - I didn't know that birds are more active in the spring
Rosaleen - And I didn't know about insects coming back in the spring, I thought they were there all the time.
All About Seeds, Flowers, and Plants In The Spring
How Does A Seed Become Plant?
Nuri - I liked learning about the minerals that the seeds need from the soil
Nora - I didn't know all the names of the parts of the seeds before I watched this
Rosaleen - I didn't know that the seed had a thing inside it to give it food before it could produce it's own food.
How Do Seeds Travel?
Nuri - I didn't know that sometimes the animals eat the seeds and then poop them out!
Rosaleen - Me too! And I didn't know about seeds with hooks that can get stuck to your fur and taken across the world.
Look Inside A Flower
Nuri - I didn't know that the leaves can turn sunlight inot energy!
Rosaleen - I learnt that when the pollinators get pollen to eat from one flower it gets stuck to them and then they carry it on to somewhere else.
Nora & Caoimhe - We agree with Nuri, that the plants turn sunlight into food is really interesting!
Why Do Some Flowers Regrow Every Year?
Nora - I didn't know about the bulbs and plants being dormant and that that's the reason why bulbs don't die and that they're kept alive.
Nuri - I didn't know their was even somethign called a bulb, and then I think the same as Nora!
Rosaleen - I didn't know that food was stored intside the bulb to feed the plant before it grows.
Springtime Allergies! Why Does Springtime Make Some People Sneeze?
Nuri - I didn't know that your immune system makes mistakes sometimes and that's why you ahve an allergy.
Nora - I dind;t know where snot came from and I thought that was really interesting!
Rosaleen - I didn't know your immune system makes mistakes either, and I didn't know that something that causes and alergy is called an allergen.
